In the summer of 2019, MWS Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft (MWSP) launched a competition inviting local artists to submit ideas for redesigning the ground surface at Neumarkt, a central square in Mannheim’s Neckarstadt-West neighborhood. Through a public vote by local residents, our design was selected as the winning concept.
The idea behind it: people from 160 nations live together in Neckarstadt-West — this diversity inspired our idea of creating a series of different flags with each flag being composed from elements of the ensigns of the various countries where the neighborhood's residents com from. To create a cohesive visual language, the colors of the flags were reduced to black and white — a graphic translation that highlights form and structure while celebrating diversity.
